Responsibilities

We have been retained by a global leader in the aggregates sector to identify and appoint a high-calibre Operations Director to lead UK operations from their Derby headquarters. This is a rare opportunity to join a fast-paced, well-established international business at the forefront of sustainable construction materials and infrastructure development.

The Business

Our client is a market-leading provider of construction aggregates and materials, with a strong presence across Europe, North America, and emerging markets. Their UK operation plays a critical role in the group’s global strategy, supplying high-volume materials to major infrastructure, civil engineering, and construction projects. The Role

Reporting to the UK Managing Director and working closely with global stakeholders, the Operations Director will be responsible for overseeing all UK operational activities including extraction, processing, logistics, compliance, and health & safety across multiple sites.

You will lead a large team of operational managers and engineers, ensuring the highest levels of performance, cost-efficiency, environmental stewardship, and workforce engagement.

Qualifications

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all operational functions across UK sites, including quarrying, production, distribution, and site management.

  • Develop and implement strategic operational plans aligned with group-wide objectives.

  • Ensure full regulatory compliance (including health, safety, and environmental standards).

  • Drive continuous improvement and lean initiatives to improve output, reduce costs, and enhance site efficiency.

  • Oversee multi-million-pound capex projects and site upgrades.

  • Build, develop, and mentor high-performing teams; foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and safety.

  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, including supply chain, commercial, finance, and global operations.

  • Represent the UK operation at international board level when required.

Candidate Profile

  • Proven experience as an Operations Director or Senior Operations Leader within the aggregates, mining, heavy industry, or construction materials sectors.

  • Strong knowledge of quarrying/extraction operations and regulatory frameworks (e.g., HSE, environmental permits).

  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills with a collaborative, pragmatic approach.

  • Demonstrated experience managing complex, multi-site operations.

  • Commercially astute with a clear understanding of operational finance and cost control.

  • Comfortable working within an international matrix organisation.

  • Engineering or technical background highly desirable; relevant professional qualifications preferred.
