Executive Recruitment Across the UK

Exec Capital is a London-based executive recruitment firm that places C-suite executives and senior leaders with businesses across the UK. While our headquarters are in London, our executive search practice operates nationally — with active candidate networks in every major UK business centre and a track record of placements from Edinburgh to Southampton, Cardiff to Cambridge. We recruit across all C-suite and Director-level functions, including CEO, COO, CFO, CTO, CMO and the full range of fractional and interim executive appointments.

The UK’s business landscape is genuinely distributed. The Department for Levelling Up and successive government strategies have recognised that economic activity, investment and senior leadership demand are spread across regional cities and growth corridors — not concentrated solely in London. Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol and Edinburgh each have substantial executive hiring markets of their own, with distinct candidate pools, compensation benchmarks and sector concentrations.

London Executive Recruitment

London remains the UK’s primary executive hiring market, home to the headquarters of most FTSE 100 companies, the majority of UK financial services businesses, and the largest concentration of PE-backed and venture-backed businesses in Europe. The City of London Corporation reports that the Square Mile alone employs over 500,000 people. Exec Capital recruits across all London submarkets — the City, Canary Wharf, West End, Tech City and outer London business parks.

South East England Executive Recruitment

The South East beyond London contains some of the UK’s most significant business clusters — the Thames Valley technology corridor, the M3 corridor from Basingstoke to Southampton, the financial services presence in Brighton and Croydon, and university-driven knowledge economies in Oxford and Cambridge. South East Local Enterprise Partnership data shows the region has one of the highest concentrations of knowledge-intensive businesses outside London.

South and South West England

The South and South West contain strong defence, aerospace, maritime and professional services clusters. Southampton is a major business centre with significant financial services and shipping-related executive demand. Bristol has grown into one of the UK’s most active tech and creative economy hubs, consistently ranked in the Tech West index as a top UK city for technology business growth.

Midlands Executive Recruitment

Birmingham is the UK’s second city and one of its fastest-growing business centres. The wider Midlands contains significant automotive, manufacturing, logistics and professional services clusters. The West Midlands Combined Authority has driven substantial inward investment, creating increased C-suite and senior leadership demand across the region. Nottingham and the East Midlands also represent active hiring markets particularly across financial services, retail and distribution.

North of England Executive Recruitment

Manchester has become the UK’s most significant business centre outside London, with a particularly strong professional services, financial services and technology sector. Leeds is the UK’s largest financial centre outside London, with a substantial legal, banking and accountancy cluster. Liverpool, Newcastle and the wider North East represent growing markets for executive hiring, supported by significant public and private sector investment. The Manchester Growth Company and Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership both publish useful data on regional business conditions.

Scotland and Wales Executive Recruitment

Edinburgh is Scotland’s financial capital and home to significant asset management, insurance and financial services businesses including Standard Life Aberdeen, Baillie Gifford and major banking operations. Glasgow has a strong professional services, technology and manufacturing base. In Wales, Cardiff has grown into a genuine business centre with public sector, financial services and media industry clusters, supported by the Welsh Government’s economic development programme.

International Executive Recruitment

Beyond the UK, Exec Capital supports international businesses recruiting UK-based executives and UK firms with overseas leadership requirements. Our international executive recruitment practice covers US companies expanding into Europe, businesses requiring executives with cross-border experience, and Gulf and Middle East executive appointments including Dubai executive recruitment.

How Executive Recruitment Differs by Region

Regional executive hiring markets differ from London in three important respects that affect how searches are conducted:

Candidate pool depth. London’s executive talent pool is deep enough that most C-suite searches can be conducted within the city. Regional searches often require identifying candidates willing to relocate or commute, which broadens the geography of the search but also narrows the pool of candidates with both the right experience and the right personal circumstances.

Compensation benchmarks. Regional compensation at C-suite and Director level typically runs 15–25% below London equivalents for comparable roles, though this gap narrows at the most senior levels where national and international benchmarks apply. The CIPD’s reward management surveys provide useful regional benchmarking data.

Sector concentration. Each regional market has a distinct sector composition — financial services in Edinburgh, automotive and manufacturing in Birmingham and the Midlands, technology and media in Manchester and Bristol. Effective regional executive search requires a candidate network calibrated to that sector, not a generic national database.
