Ranking the Top 20 UK Asset Managers by AUM

Ranking the Top 20 UK Asset Managers by AUM

The UK is home to one of the world’s largest concentrations of institutional asset management, running trillions of pounds across equities, fixed income, multi-asset and private markets. This guide ranks and profiles twenty of the leading asset managers with significant UK operations, covering the global giants that run vast books from London, the large UK-headquartered houses, and the specialist and boutique managers that define particular corners of the market.

This ranking focuses on institutional and fund asset management — firms that manage money for pension schemes, insurers, institutions and pooled funds. It is distinct from our companion guide to private-client wealth managers; here the lens is assets under management at the institutional and fund level. Figures are drawn from the most recent company disclosures and industry data available, and AUM naturally moves with markets and flows.

A Note from Our Founder — Adrian Lawrence FCA

Asset management senior hiring has a particular character. The investment talent is often the visible part — the CIOs and star fund managers — but the harder, and increasingly scrutinised, part is the governance and control layer around them. Where a firm operates as an authorised manager or an AIFM, the regulator expects a genuinely independent risk function, a credible board, and named senior managers who satisfy the fitness-and-propriety standard. Boards that focus only on investment pedigree and treat governance as an afterthought tend to struggle at approval. We brief these searches to weight both.

The global giants operating in the UK

At the top by sheer scale are the global managers that run enormous books, with major UK operations even where headquartered elsewhere.

BlackRock — The world’s largest asset manager, running trillions globally with a major London operation spanning active, index and alternative strategies.

Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM) — The largest UK-headquartered asset manager, responsible for more than $1.8tn of assets, established in 1836 and known for index strategies, active management and market-leading stewardship.

Vanguard — A global passive-investing giant with a large and fast-growing UK presence serving both institutional and retail investors.

State Street Global Advisors — One of the world’s largest managers, a pioneer of index investing, with a significant UK institutional operation.

The large UK-headquartered houses

These UK-rooted managers run the bulk of their assets from Britain and anchor the domestic industry, spanning active equities, fixed income, multi-asset and increasingly private markets.

Schroders — One of the UK’s largest and most diversified managers, reporting around £825bn AUM at the end of 2025 — up 6% on net new business and market gains — with a deep research culture and strong institutional franchise.

abrdn (aberdeen) — A major UK manager reporting AUM in the region of £500bn, spanning institutional, wholesale and adviser channels, having moved back toward the aberdeen brand in 2025.

M&G Investments — A diversified UK manager with a long heritage across fixed income, equities, property and multi-asset, part of the M&G plc group.

Baillie Gifford — An Edinburgh-headquartered, partnership-owned house renowned for long-term, high-conviction, bottom-up active equity management and a distinctive investment culture.

Aviva Investors — The global asset management arm of Aviva, running institutional and multi-asset strategies with a sizeable UK base.

Insight Investment — A major UK fixed-income and liability-driven investment specialist, one of the largest managers of LDI and institutional bond mandates.

Janus Henderson — A transatlantic active manager with deep London roots, running global equity, fixed income and multi-asset strategies.

Columbia Threadneedle — A large global manager with a major UK operation across equities, fixed income and multi-asset, serving institutional and wholesale clients.

The specialists, alternatives and boutiques

Alongside the diversified houses sits a set of firms defined by a particular strength — alternatives, investment trusts, or a distinctive active niche.

Intermediate Capital Group (ICG) — A FTSE-100 alternative asset manager and one of Europe’s leading private markets and credit houses, spanning private debt, structured and equity strategies.

Man Group — The world’s largest listed hedge fund manager, London-headquartered, spanning systematic and discretionary strategies across liquid and private markets.

Polar Capital — A London-listed specialist active manager known for its technology, healthcare and thematic investment strategies.

Jupiter Fund Management — A London-listed active manager with a focus on high-conviction equity and fixed-income strategies for wholesale and institutional clients.

Liontrust Asset Management — A UK active specialist known for its process-driven equity and sustainable investment franchises.

Ninety One — A global manager with strong UK and emerging-market franchises, dual-listed in London and Johannesburg.

Ruffer — A distinctive London-based absolute-return manager known for capital-preservation, all-weather investing for institutions and private clients.

Record Financial Group — A specialist London-listed currency and derivatives manager serving institutional clients globally.

Artemis Investment Management — A well-regarded independent UK active manager running high-conviction equity and multi-asset strategies for wholesale and institutional clients.

Why asset-management hiring is a two-sided brief

The consistent theme across the sector is that senior asset-management teams have two sides that rarely overlap perfectly. Investment leaders — the Chief Investment Officer and senior portfolio managers — bring market and performance credibility. Governance and control leaders — risk, compliance, oversight — bring regulatory approvability and the independent-challenge capability the regime requires. The strongest firms pair these deliberately, and much of the senior-search brief is about getting that balance right.

Where a firm operates as an AIFM, the regulator specifically expects the risk-management function to be genuinely independent of portfolio management — a structural requirement that makes the CRO appointment a serious, scrutinised hire rather than a formality. The compliance and oversight functions (Head of Compliance, MLRO) carry the same weight.

Governance, boards and the regulatory backdrop

Asset managers are navigating a demanding regulatory environment — the Consumer Duty reaching into retail-facing products, the transition to UK Sustainability Reporting Standards, and closer scrutiny of ESG-labelled funds. Each raises the expectations on boards. Independent non-executive directors with genuine investment-governance literacy, capable Chairs, and Senior Independent Directors who can hold management to account on value and outcomes are in real demand.

For institutional allocators and family offices selecting managers, the quality of a firm’s senior team and governance is itself part of the diligence — which is why board and control-function depth has become a competitive differentiator, not just a compliance necessity.
