Ranking the Top 20 London Insurance and Lloyd’s Market Businesses

Ranking the Top 20 London Insurance & Lloyd’s Market Businesses

London is the centre of the global specialty insurance and reinsurance market. The Lloyd’s market alone began 2026 with 108 active syndicates, and around it sits a dense ecosystem of listed carriers, managing agents, and the world’s largest brokers — a concentration of underwriting expertise, capital and talent found nowhere else. This guide profiles twenty of the leading insurance businesses that define the London and Lloyd’s market, grouped by the role they play: the listed carriers, the major managing agents, and the broking houses that intermediate the risk.

The London market has been through a striking period of consolidation and inbound acquisition. A flurry of Lloyd’s acquisitions was announced in 2025, the majority by US buyers, and the approach for Beazley by Zurich underlined how attractive London-listed carriers have become as takeover targets. That backdrop makes senior leadership and governance in this sector especially consequential, and especially fluid.

A Note from Our Founder — Adrian Lawrence FCA

The London insurance market is one of the most distinctive senior hiring environments in the UK. A managing agent CEO or chief underwriting officer has to be credible to three audiences at once — the FCA, the PRA, and the Corporation of Lloyd’s — and the pool of people who combine that regulatory approvability with genuine underwriting and market standing is small and well known within the market. Add the current wave of M&A, and boards are managing succession, integration and regulatory approval all at once. It is a market where discreet, relationship-led search is the norm rather than the exception.

The listed London market carriers

At the heart of the market sit the London-listed specialty (re)insurers — FTSE constituents whose Lloyd’s platforms drive much of their business and whose senior appointments carry both regulatory and public-market scrutiny.

Beazley — A FTSE-100 specialist insurer and, through Beazley Furlonge, the largest managing agent in the Lloyd’s market by gross written premium. Reported 2025 revenue of around $6bn and net income of $913m, with a market-leading cyber franchise. Lloyd’s business accounted for roughly 78% of its insurance revenue.

Hiscox — A London-listed specialty insurer with a major Lloyd’s platform (Syndicates 33 and 6104) alongside a growing retail business, consistently among the highest-valued London market carriers.

Lancashire Holdings — A London-listed specialty (re)insurer focused on property, energy, marine and aviation risks, operating through its Lloyd’s syndicates with a disciplined, cycle-aware underwriting model.

Conduit Holdings — A pure-play reinsurer listed in London (operating from Bermuda), part of the recent wave of new London-linked reinsurance capital.

IQUW — A Lloyd’s-based (re)insurer and syndicate manager, subject to a planned acquisition by Starr International — illustrative of the inbound M&A reshaping the market.

The major managing agents and underwriting businesses

Managing agents run the syndicates that make up Lloyd’s. Many are the Lloyd’s arms of global (re)insurers; others are independent underwriting businesses. Together they concentrate the market’s underwriting leadership.

Brit — A leading global specialty insurer and Lloyd’s managing agent, owned by Fairfax, with a strong presence across the market’s specialty lines.

Chaucer — An international specialty (re)insurance business and long-established Lloyd’s managing agent operating multiple syndicates.

Canopius — One of the largest global specialty lines (re)insurers operating at Lloyd’s, with a broad international footprint run from London.

Tokio Marine Kiln — The Lloyd’s and London market platform of Tokio Marine, operating well-established syndicates across specialty lines.

Atrium — A respected independent Lloyd’s managing agent known for disciplined specialty underwriting through Syndicate 609.

Inigo — One of the newer Lloyd’s managing agents, launched with fresh capital and a data-led underwriting approach — part of the market’s recent renewal.

Ascot — A global specialty (re)insurer with a significant Lloyd’s platform and broad specialty-lines capability.

Hamilton — A Bermuda-founded specialty (re)insurer with a growing Lloyd’s managing agency and London underwriting presence.

The broking houses

Brokers intermediate the risk that flows into the London and Lloyd’s market, and the largest maintain major London operations. Broking bench strength is one of the market’s most-contested talent areas.

Marsh McLennan — The world’s largest insurance broker (2025 revenue around $25bn) and consistently top-ranked for London broking bench strength, with a vast London market presence.

Aon — The world’s second-largest broker and a dominant force in London specialty and reinsurance broking through Aon’s Reinsurance Solutions.

Howden — A London-headquartered global broker that has grown rapidly through acquisition to become a top-three London broking house and a genuine challenger to the majors.

Lockton — The world’s largest privately held broker, which climbed to fourth for London broking bench strength on the strength of its specialty capability.

Gallagher — A global top-five broker with a strong and growing London specialty and reinsurance presence through Gallagher Re.

WTW — A global top-four broker with deep London market roots and specialty broking strength across the market’s major lines.

McGill and Partners — A London-founded specialty broking challenger that has scaled rapidly, recording strong growth in specialty and reinsurance revenue.

Why senior hiring in the London market is distinctive

The defining feature of London market senior recruitment is the triple regulatory dimension. A managing agent’s senior leaders — the CEO, chief underwriting officer, Chief Risk Officer and executive directors — must satisfy FCA and, for insurers, PRA approval, and also the Corporation of Lloyd’s expectations of those running syndicates in its market. That triple standard narrows the credible, approvable candidate pool sharply, and it is why sector-specific search matters here more than almost anywhere.

Underwriting leadership is the other scarcity. Active underwriters and chief underwriting officers with a proven record through a full market cycle are the market’s most valuable individuals, and they are well known to it — which makes open advertising largely ineffective and discreet approach essential. The executive director and COO appointments at a managing agent carry the same regulatory weight as the CEO.

Governance and the M&A wave

The current consolidation has raised the stakes on board and governance appointments. Acquirers entering Lloyd’s need approvable, market-credible boards; targets managing a sale need strong Chairs and non-executive directors to steer the process and reassure the regulators. Integration then drives further senior change as acquired platforms are absorbed. Board change under regulatory scrutiny — keeping every senior responsibility owned through a transition — is a live discipline across the market right now.

For firms managing these transitions, Senior Independent Directors and committee chairs with genuine insurance governance experience are in particular demand, as is interim and urgent SMF cover to hold functions lawfully while permanent, approved successors are found.
